while sanding down the old paint off my Newport I came across this, looks like a pretty thick coat of filler over fiberglass? I'm lost and need help identifying what this could be the boat was made in 1969 what kind of process did they use back then

I will hazard a guess that what you have is a previous application of a polyester body filler with red cream hardener. Common way to make quick work of various blemishes or print through of heavy cloths prior to painting.
