This is a bit off topic, but funny. Last night at dinner it was difficult not to notice a patron at the bar. He had a tee shirt on that said "Plumbing Heating and HVAC"...I quipped that HVAC must be an acronym for Highly Visible Ass Crack ;-)

Give it a name you'll be proud to say over the radio when calling other boats, or may days.

I share the same philosophy as Anchor and Stu.... a sail boat should have a little dignity. Goofy, play on words, sexual innuendo names are for stinkpots... fishing boats, party barges, ski boat and their ilk are well suited to "sextacy" and "wet dream" etc.

That said.... naming a Cat27 like a battleship i.e. "Victory", "Conqueror", "Indominatable" or "Constitution" is pretty much ridiculous also.

Sailboats are not toys(maybe works of art, but not toys)... and they should not be given toy names. Their names should reflect the grace and elegance they represent. It is very appropriate to honor other elegant and gracefull things.... such as a beautiful or powerful woman... in naming a sailboat. "Lydia" "Aphroditie" "Queen Mary" (heh, heh). I like animal or action names too.... "Speedy" "Impulse" "Dolphin" "Kestrel"... The key is dignity... cute is fine as long as it isn't offensive or disrespectful.
Even though there are some battleships and even an aircraft carrier name in there, the America's Cup is a good mine for sailboat names: Magic, Mischief, Volunteer, Shamrock, Valkyrie, Vigilant, Reliance, Enterprise, Constellation, Courageous, Intrepid, Resolute, Ranger, Weatherly (I esp. like that one), Endeavour (with or without the "u"), Liberty, Freedom.

Thanks for the help everyone, I'll be sure to keep all this in mind when I finally choose a name.

When I sanded all the dark blue paint of my C25, the name Dovetail appeared on the transom. My wife said, " Cool, you should name it that!" I have a wood shop and have cut many a dovetail, but I can't for the life of me figure out why anyone would name a boat Dovetail.
I thought Waterlogged was much more appropriate since I pumped out what seemed like a 1000 gallons of water when I bought her.

Maybe whoever named her Dovetail also had a wood shop?

Sometimes a name will, indeed present itself. A friend with a great little Victoria 18 who used to 'rag' me about my little supersnark 11 footer when seeing my Oday17 for the first time simply said "it's About Time" and so it was named. More recently I have many stinkpotter friends as well constantly complaining about rising fuel costs at the marina to which I'd always answer "Wind is Free" (boat name#2). There's lots of cool names out there, just cruise the marina and you could get lots of ideas(almost named the Oday 'therapy' until I saw it on another boat already).;)

Can't agree more with the statements above. My only input is, "What does the admiral think?" Assumming there is one. Bringing a boat into a family is a lot like bringing in a dog. If it's going to be YOUR dog, name it what you want. If you want the family to have any part of it, then solicit their inputs. While I like pretentious names (Intrepid, Enterprise, Wasp, etc.), they were a little too daunting for the admiral. Also, while cute names like "Knotaplane" was a possibility, it was a little too cute. We settled for "Acadia". It's the admiral's favorite national park and we really want to sail there. Oh, and don't discount the need to make the name clear on the radio. Again, like a dog, it should be easy to shout out. Um...reminds me of kids names that should always end in a vowel....vowels carry better through the neighborhood....Hard to carry "George"...but "Antoniooooooooooo" goes on forever..but I digress.

Just saw Bob M's post....isn't Plumbing Heating and HAVAC redundant? Unless Bob nailed the real meaning!

I thought of Zoloft for our 20' O'Day. Both have the same effect on my anxieties. We settled on Lubberdink Twee (Lub 1 was our first boat, a Skipper Snipe 16-Twee-Dutch for "two"). Haven't gotten her into the water for months tho since so much rain and no water being let out of the lake, now the campgrounds are flooded and we can't even get to the ROAD to the PARKING LOT for the RAMP! But one day soon...

In many jurisdictions, the plumbing and HVAC are separate trades.

Just the engineer in me peeking out...:):):)

I bought my boat in 1976. Since it was the bicentinial we named it Freedom. Wouldn't ya know that shortly after that Dennis Connor won the Americas Cup in a boat named freedom. Since I know Dennis I told him the Cup should go to me. Didn't happen. Friends of our were buying a boat and everytime they looked at the accessory list they said, "Might as well." So that's what they named her. I've seen boats with totally unprintable names like B--- Job. My advice, keep it short, keep it simple, keep it personal. By the way you can sail Stars and Stripes. It's home port is now Antigua in the Virgin Islands. Fair winds...
