Sailboat maintenance in San Antonio area

Hello,

I'm new to the forum and have just purchased a 1987 Catalina 22. The hull needs some work below the waterline but most of the shops only seem to work on power boats. Basically I just want to have the hull sanded a bit, and have an anti-fouling coat applied. The previous owner kindly applied new bottom paint but had no way to apply it where the bunkboards on the trailer touch the hull.

Is there anyone that could recommend a good place for this type of work around San Antonio?

Thanks,
Steve

A jack isn't even needed.

Raise the tongue with the support wheel as high as it can go. Support the bow with a 4x4 and some concrete block or other things as strong, lower the tongue. This will give you access to the front half of the hull.

Repeat the process for the stern. Lower the wheel which will raise the stern. Support the stern and then raise the wheel. This will allow access to the stern half.

There are probably some videos on Youtube showing the process.

Agree with the above.........its a relatively small boat for DIY or hire some cheap help to raise the boat as dlochner suggested tape, sand and paint the bottom with 2 coats of antifoulant paint (ablative or hard based on what others at your marina apply) but be sure to wear proper PPE and if you hire someone, give them a big tip.

Welcome to SBO. Just a thought from looking at your boat you might just raise one side of the trailer at a time just 10" or so and then support the boat with a temporary bunk from the ground just inboard of the trailer bunk and then drop that side of the trailer back out of the way while you paint. My preferred method would be to lift the entire boat off/above the trailer as most of us have done as you will likely want to do that for a variety of future tasks.

Welcome to the SBO Forum. Congrats on your boat.

Your bottom painting... Is this of esthetics or are you planning to leave the boat in the water for extended periods?

When I sailed my trailer boat, I enjoyed the free moorage beside my house on the trailer. I hauled the boat to the water where I wanted to sail. Slipped the boat into the water. Sailed to my hearts content and then back on the trailer and home. I would wash any the boat and buff the bottom occasionally to keep that smooth fast sailing experience.

Bottom paint is not really needed if you do not plan to keep the boat sitting in the water weeks/months on end.

Good point John. Can you even sail at Boerne Lake? Seems like they have a lot of restrictions

Thank you for the welcome and the good advice. I am trying to find a slip on Canyon lake but they are hard to come by. It is on a trailer now but the goal is to have it in the water soon so I can step on and sail away.

Part of my concern with the bottom is just wanting an experienced set of eyes to look it over and make sure all is well. I just feel like sanding the bottom and applying new bottom paint would give me peace of mind. However, I am new to sailing so am open to advice.

I won't be putting it in Boerne Lake. Am planning to sail it on Canyon Lake, and maybe occasionally trailer it to Corpus Christi to sail in the bay.

I understand the thoughts that: "if I have the boat in the water and all set up, then I'll use it more."

I think that is something we tell ourselves to rationalize the expense of keeping the boat in the water. With the boat in the water ready to sail, there is added maintenance expense beyond that of trailering it. The environment on the water is constantly working to try and sink the boat. A boat is an affront to nature. Nature seeks equilibrium. A boat sitting on top of the water puts nature out of balance.

Not that the expense is without reward. I love sitting and working on my boat almost as much as I relish the experience of sailing it.

Even trailering a boat has it's costs. You save the moorage fees, but you exchange them for the wear/tear of raising and lowering the mast, the time to set up to sail, and take down to drive home. Let alone the dings from rocks and potholes on the road.

I actuality, every which way you cut it a boat is a toy with expenses.

But it is a joy to experience.

As others have said, the 22 isn't a very heavy boat and you can probably deal with one side at a time. Are you thinking LCYC? Been there before for a racing weekend, that ramp is a doozie!

I had a trailerable Mac 26s for 10 years and we never took it anywhere. Kept it slipped all season long. We did get the ease of ramp launching every year as opposed to having to use the crane on the Hunter
