Sailboat hull numbering

I'm guess this question has been asked a million times before and this probably varies from state to state, but in Maryland, I've noticed a 60-40 ratio of boats with MD and a registration number on the hull (or somewhere else visable) and those without. I've just boat my 29.5 hunter at the end of last season in Maryland and it didn't have these numbers. Again, around the marina I'm seeing no real ryme or reason to those that have versus those that don't except it looks like the older boats have this on the hull and newer ones don't. Perhaps I was asleep *zzz when this was discussed in my classes and at settlement.

Documented Boats

Boats documented with the USCG are not required to display state registration nos. on the hull.

Documentation

Keep in mind that there are rules for documented boats too. The name (on both sides) and hailing port must be displayed, the hull # needs to be permanently affixed inside (not just stick-ons), and you still need to show your registration stickers (the state wants their take).
