I personally know someone who spent the better part of an afternoon on his first day aboard and aircraft carrier looking for the pool hall. He kept getting told " oh they moved it to the 2nd deck...3rd deck...O2 level.....LOL*
Let's see on the DDG I was on there was the search for 3" of gig line. relative bearing grease, a bucket of steam, "Come up to the forecastle and see the sea bat. But my all time favorite was to put the new guys on mail buoy watch. Rigged out with type 1 life jacket and a long boat hook. Good times... 
I was a bit of a gearhead when I joined the Army. When the guys told me to get a can of track tension, I brought back a 5 gallon can of grease that was used to adjust the track tension of APC's.
They told me to get an exhaust sample, so I went to the auto craft shop and finagled an exhaust gas analyzer.
Squelch for the radios? Electrical contact cleaner.....
They didn't mess with me anymore.........

Funniest one I know of, a buddy of mine managed a big grocery store and told his new young employee he needed to fill the drinking fountains, 2 hrs later and putting together enough hose to reach across the store someone told him there hooked to city water and don't need filled
Would you be willing to sell me one of your spares, I'm' all out. I could also use a new hammerfore, mine got bent.
On DDG's passing under the Coronado Bridge, we would tell the FNG that the mast had to cranked down to clear the bridge. There was winch in the Signalman's Locker behind the bridge but it was locked and he had to get the key from the Captain...
