Received a sailboat with house that I purchased on Lake Lanier. Hove no need for it and would like to donate or sell it. Would anyone know where I could do either?

I have been trying to donate my Catalina 27. Lived on it with my wife for six years before she died and can't be around it. Could not find someone to donate it to. They all say they can't make money on it

I donated my O'Day 25 to Boat Angel (boatangel.com). Once it was sold, I met with the new owners who were thrilled with the transaction. In fact, we still communicate once in a while to let me know how she's doing and their improvements.

You might see if there is a Sea Scout program in your local area. They may be able to use the boat if in sailing condition. No one wants a wreck that has to be carried in pieces to the landfill.

I was going to say Sea Scout, but I was too late :)

Boat Angel, Boat US, Kars4Kids, etc... all want donations. They don't want wrecks. You may not agree with how each charity is run and/or where the $ goes.

Could always list it on craigslist at $500 or something. "Free" really brings out the bozos, but if'n you're bored.... :)

However, for boats with lead keels (like Catalinas) there usually is somebody that will take a wreck. The lead is worth quite a bit as scrap. The keel of a C-27 is worth ~$700+ around here. Add in the mast, the stainless, etc... The fiberglass does, unfortunately, end up in a landfill if the scrapper is reputable. Steel keels aren't worth the effort.

Our local club got a donation boat that we plan to use for training and other activities.

Isn't that the truth. No matter the item, I will NEVER list something for free again.

Just listed a desk for $10.. The guy gave me $20 and there were no bozos replying. Heck even $1 seems to work for some items. I assume the goofballs search for "Free". "Can you deliver it ? I apparently can't read..so I will ask what type of boat it is." Etc.

Thanks for the info. I may try Craig list at a couple hundred dollars. Engine was rebuilt by the yard about 100 hours ago and just needs routine maintenence.. Ultimately it just needs to go. To difficult to be around

Condition is everything. If the boat is dumpster ready nobody will want it. That said, check with area yacht clubs. My club here has accepted several donated boats which we sold at bargain prices. The money then went to our junior sailing program. Smaller boats donated, like a Laser, simply become part of the junior sailing fleet.
