Hi. I haven't been sailing for nearly 15 years, but during the 1980s I owned/sailed an AMF Puffer (12.5' - wonderful little boat!), a Hobie 14, and windsurfers. I also had a friend with a Cal 24 that I used to help sail, and I once helped take a 30' Catalina from Portland, Oregon to Seattle, Washington. I would say that I'm an intermediate skill level sailer (at least in freshwater). I would like to get back into sailing, or, I should say give my wife a chance to try sailing to see if she'd like it. In any case, I'm hoping that some of the folks here could help. Ultimately, I'd like to get into a little boat that the two of us could spend the weekend on (WWPotter 19?), but for now we'd just like to get something to "get our feet wet" to see if this is something we want to pursue more seriously. So, if you have any recommendations or, better yet, a boat you'd like to sell, here are my criteria: (1) around $1000-$2000 (incl. trailer) (2) used - even 10-20 years old is okay; sailable as-is, but may need some maintenance or repairs (3) dry, easy-to-sail, day sailer (my Hobie days are over) (4) trailerable and less than about 1500lbs total towing weight (5) reasonably roomy enough for 2-4 adults (6) located within about 1 day's drive of Sacramento, CA Also, if you can point me towards a sailboat dealer in the greater Sacramento/Tahoe area, this would be greatly appreciated, too. Hi Marty, You can find an O'Day for a small price that will serve nicely. Mine has a centerboard, and your Mrs. might appreciate a little lead in the bottom if you move up in size just a bit. Still trailerable, very stable and easy to sail. Good luck and fair winds. Andy

Flying Scot - none better
This boat floats in abput a foot of water, has a deep cockpit that can hold six adults and all their gear in comfort, can be towed by a Honda, moves well in light air, will plane under the right conditions but is stable and forgiving enough for a novice. The Scot was recently inducted into the Sailing Hall of Fame. I used to rent them and go daysailing when I lived in DC. Click the link below to the Flying Scot Sailing Association website. I agree with Droopy, not sneezy!
The SJ21 is an excellent boat for your needs and there is a cult following for them. They do not make them any more but parts are abundant. I sailed one previous to the Pearson 28 we now sail. It was easy to triler and setup and sailed very nicely. 4 bunks and room for a portipotty and sink. Big cockpit and fun to race. Tim R.
