Who are these jackasses that for two times in a row have disrupted a launch at Kennedy?
You can see this morning in the background a rather large sailboat not to far off the coast heading from north to south. Orion is lit up by these massive spotlights military air traffic overhead and such
You cnt tell me the operator of that boat did not know their location

Sure enough the rest of us will have to deal with another bureaucratic hoop to jump through because of this
My god smarten up!!!!

Hi CYQK,

Is there a broadcast on #16 before the launch announcing the restriction. Someone heading south may not watch TV to get the local news especially if they have been out overnight. Everyone wants to take the advantage of good weather, NASA, sailors, fishermen, etc. Were there any patrolling vessels nearby, sailboats don't move too fast?

A Notice to Mariners was issued. There's still a hour-plus of launch window left, ending at 9:44 EST

Light 'em up!

Edit: Whoops, now it's getting breezier. Hold, please. ;)

I dunno... the morning TV has the newsbar saying the flight was canceled due to high winds. That wind should be good for the sailboat. Who has right of way in this case:confused:

Ah-ha! Now the "live" news reporter mentions the boat.

Usually CG will broadcast on 16 to switch to 22a for the notice. But they are not consistant in their methods as you move down the east coast. Some local stations are good in their methodology and some are not.
Of course you should listen to every 22a announcement but some are less applicable than others.
Hopefully the anmoincement was well done with plenty of advance notice.
And then there are the sailboats that turn off their vhf

Don't get me started on NASA. At a news conference yesterday, NASA Administrator Charles Bolden couldn't even answer how or why the launch window was determined. An astronaut in the room answered the question AFTER Bolden asked him to go find the answer. The astronaut already knew the answer. Bolden also didn't know how or who came up with the name "Orion" for the new crew module.

I pine for the NASA that knew what the heck they were doing. And when they didn't know they figured it out.

If they really cared, or were serious about it they would have a patrol boat out there with a quad fifty cal gun up front for show purposes.

The last time this happened, the boat was 30+ miles offshore.

From Mexico's space program? No, just bird poop and sandblasting media. :D

They're probably worried more about the threat the boaters might pose to the launch, than the other way around.

Lived aboard at Port Canaveral a number of years - Coast Guard starts the announcements on 16 & 22 well before the launch and provides the 'drop zone' coordinates. Cheers!

(For the uninitiated: Drop zone is where the used oarts of the craft - boosters, shields, etc. - fall. The 'zone' changes depending on the targeted orbit and the prevailing winds)

Interesting article. I don't quite get how a sailboat would pose a problem, assuming that most boats off the coast would be larger than the rocket. The article states:

"The spacecraft is rigged with 1,200 sensors to gauge everything from heat to vibration to radiation. At 11 feet tall with a 16.5-foot base, Orion is bigger than the old-time Apollo capsules and, obviously, more advanced. As NASA's program manager Mark Geyer noted, "The inside of the capsule is totally different.""

Happy Thursday

If that were an aircraft pilot they would be all over him/her but I guess they cut sailors some slack.

Re: Mexican Space Program?

A small boat full of Mexicans was stopped by the USCG off the coast of California. When asked they indicated they were part of the invasion force to conquer the US. That got a big laugh aboard the CG cutter seeing the small boat and ill equipped occupants. The smile quickly left their faces when them added; "we are just the last boat at the tail end of the invasion".
