IF YOUR HARD OVER ON A STABOARD REACH AND WANT TO TURN TOWARD THE PORT , WHATS THE BEST WAY TRIM YOUR WAY OUT OF THIS SITUATION ,IS THE JIB JUST TO FLAT ?? , AND NOT TO GET LOCKED OVER IN THE FIRST PLACE?/

If I understand you correctly....

....you're talking about the boat wanting to "round up" into the wind while on a stbd reach, and you're trying to steer opposite the direction the boat wants to go?? This is called "weather helm", and all you have to do is ease your mainsail. If you can't ease the mainsail enough to eliminate the weather helm without the mainsail constantly flogging (luffing), you need to reef the main as well. Hope that helps! Tim

Trick Question

If you are on a starboard reach, the wind is already coming from the starboard side. A turn to port will put the wind astern.

If your helm is full over while sailing a reach your sail plan is unbalanced. Easing the mainsheet and/or traveler should fix the problem. If you need a reef, heave to and put your reef in with control and comfort. Heaving to is a maneuver that far too few sailors know about and use yet it is very easy to do in heavy weather.
