Sail trim Quiz

Mr. Ernie: When I first developed my Sail Trim Chart I really pondered the question of how to display wind speed. I finally settled on very light, light medium and heavy and topped out at 18 knots. A couple of years ago I raced in the Catalina 30 Nationals at Santa Cruz, where the wind speed was in excess of 40 knots!! To those guys, wind speeds of 20 knots are light winds. Everything is relative. Anyway, going from very light to heavy runs the gamut from a flat sail to a sail with some belly and then finally back to a flat sail. All through that gamut, there are suttle adjustments that are necessary to keep the boat at 100% efficiency. By that I mean, when you transition out of very light to light and then into 5 to 8 your putting belly into the sail and as the wind speed increases your taking it out. Many of the adjustment are not that big. For example, the complete adjustment range for the outhaul will be in the 1' range. The main halyard may be a couple of inches.

Don, I sail a Hunter 216 and also have read and am using the info from your book and charts. The quiz stated you are beating into 5 to 15 knots of wind. I don't know much about a Catalina 30 but sail trim on my boat is significantly different when it's blowing 5 and when it's blowing 15. Great book and charts - very helpful
