Hal, Do you mean for tying the sail to the boom

before you put the cover back on? I use polyester webbing 1 inch wide about 5-6 feet long with a leather patch at the center point. That enables me to know where the middle of the length is wothout looking.

Timo42, i think you misunderstood..

he didn't want a tie with sails, he wanted a "sail tie", which as anyone who has seen Caddyshack knows, is an ascot! cup

Cup,

Wouldn't you feel foolish if I was right *butt , otoh I have been using the ones with the ball on either end but the admiral has a propensity for flinging them into the drink during removal so I think I will try Terry's system. Tim

Tarp bungee works well

I think that's what they're called at Home Depot. They are a bungee loop with a ball on one end and a little sleeve on the other to tighten against the ball. You can connect multiple cords together as necessary. Just be careful when trying to flake the sail and attach the bungees, if the ball slips out of your hand before it is secured, it really hurts when it nails you in the eye (don't ask me how I know this). I to

have experienced the wrath of the "out of control sail tie ball" (ouch). Not recommended by me. I did however like the tie with the little sail boats on it, though it may not hold up well to the elements.

Boom type

Yes the boom kind. High freeboard , light displacement ,single hand mooring pickup ,in 20kt wind means backing to the mooring. The sail was in the lazy jacks and at the most opportune time opened enough to make things even more interesting. So now I realize it must be secured as soon as it’s down and was looking for the best quick system. Thanks for all the suggestions.

The webbing straps that I discribed I just drape around my neck

and can lay the patch on the top of the sail pass the ends under and tie them in a slipped reef knot on top. It is very quick and always painless.

I've used the same sys as terry&george

i adapted this sys from my 17' daysailer and made a longer sys for my 30. i've used it for 20+ yrs and i can't think of a better way. no holding ties in your teeth, no hunting below to find the ties, and they are always there when a quick tie is needed. only drawback is the bungie cord needs to be replaced about every 4 yrs. s/v Que Pasa?

sail tie options

I moved from parachute cord to bungee to the ball on bungee to velcro which is what I am now using. I agree with all that the ball on bungee does have its headaches. So far the best one hand system is one with a bungee along one side of the boom's length, with hooks dirctly on the boom on the other side. The bungee is brought over the sail and hooked onto the boom on the other side. I have not gone to that system yet, because my sail volume is manageable with the velcro (hook and eye) fasteners that I currently use... but I may!

I use sail gaskets

I don't try to dress up my boat too much and find sail gaskets work the best.

I use..

The Star Brite Sail Lash Centipede available from West Marine. Tim R. & his wife turned me onto it and it makes sail handling a BREEZE! Basically it's a long bungee that clips under the boom and has multiple bungees that run the length of the boom all captive. It can be very easily removed/deployed or left on while sailing. The West Marine part # is 4480380. I don't actually know what page it's on because I'm using the Port Supply catalog and it's on pg. 1257 in that..

No ties required....

I am old and recently had stents put inside me so I added a mainsail furling system that was relatively inexpensive. Works easier than the headsail furler and I don't notice any major loss of performance. Highly recommended for us who want to keep sailing.

I agree with Ross Webbing is the way to go. Years ago at a trade show I bought a large roll of surplus nylon webbing. I cut 4 ties off the roll I just drape them around my neck/ If I lose or misplace a tie I just off a new one
