I recently purchased a 36' lancer with a 155 genoa, the sail shop says it has sun damage and must be cut approximately 12" on the luff and foot. what size would it be afterwards? how will it affect the performance of the sail.

~ a 145, but keep in mind that this sizing doesn't take into account loss of area. However, if you get a 12" wire pendant made up to make up the loss of a foot off the foot and hoist the sail to the top you will gain better vision from the cockpit without a big loss as more of the wind driving your boat comes down from the top of the sail.
If they cut 12" off luff and foot the draft will be all wrong - depth and position - unless they are going to recut the the belly of the sail and redo the broadseaming! I'd question them about that.
Luff and foot seems wrong anyway (assuming it's on a roller furler) - sun damage is usually along the leech.

The damage is probably along the leech and foot... not luff and foot.

If the sail was a 155% and the Lp was shortened by 12" you would
have a 148%, so like Bob M suggested you will likely end up with
a 145% or smaller. This alone should not have a huge impact on
performance, unless the luff is also being shortened substantially.
Did the sail not have a UV cover?
