I just purchased a Hunter 25.5 and took it out for the first time in a 12-20 knott wind. Upon Tacking the main sail ripped in half width wise. I am not sure if this is the original sail or not. My question is two fold. 1. Could it be that this sail was dry rotted? 2. Is it repairable or should it be replaced at any cost. Any help would be appreciated. Dan, Sorry about your 25.5's sail on her maiden voyage.:( You would need to have a sailmaker take a look at it to see if it's worth repairing. Check the Yellow Pages or ask around your marina for sailmakers in your area. Dick Vance H-25.5 "Honey Bear"

Yes and yes.

Dan: If the sail ripped on the seam you have something you can have repaired and it may be fine. Regardless, you can have it repaired until your new one is ready. Typically most owners will find that a new sail makes all the difference in the world. You boat will sail flatter and faster with better control My suggestion is to do your shopping from your local sailmaker, regular mail order and the HOW site. When you get prices be sure that you are pricing the SAME specs. Just because someone is saying that your sail is going to be 6 oz cloth, does not mean that this is the same cloth. Once you figure out what each sailmaker is using, you can then compare the quality of the cloth. There are also considerations as to the quality, and accessories.

Do make sure you compare the sails right. Some sailmakers will sell you a what seems like a good deal but really is just a real cheap sail like the whare house sailmaker. So compare cloth weights and what cloth it is. Also going with a Laminate sail would be your best bet. They tend to cost a few dollars more but will be the best in the long haul. Dacron sail are sails the will last for 20 years but the shape will be gone after about one season and would need to be re-cut. So the trade off is a sail that cloth wise will last longer or a sail shape wise. I would never buy a Dacron sail again after using UK Tape Drive I have seen the light. They are fast and lighter and hold ther shape far longer than any other sail out ther. We had a full inventory of UK Tape Drives on our 25.5 and it sailed faster and higher than allot og boats bigger. I had raced against two other 25.5 and the difference in the speed and pointing was unbeleaveable. I sell UK for something to do in the winter and can you a good deal on a new main.
