this is how I set up my jiffy reefing on my '79 Oday 23: For the forward reef: I tie off one end of the reefing line to the attachment point on the port side of the mast, right near where the boom gooseneck slides into the mast. the line runs through the lower reefing cringle from port to starboard, up the starboard side of the sail to the upper reefing cringle, through that cringle from starboard to port, then down to the eyelet on the bottom of the boom goose neck, through the eyelet from port to starboard, then cleated off on the forward cleat on the starboard side of the boom. For the aft reefing line, I secure one end to the attachment point on the aft end of port side of the boom (the same place where the mainsail outhaul is secured), run the line up the port side of the sail to the reefing cringle, through the cringle from port to starboard, through the block on the starboard side of the boom, and then secured to the aft cleat on the boom. If you need to reef, lower the halyard about a third of the way, pull down on the forward line first (I think it works better this way) until the top cringle is as far down as the folds of the sail will allow, and re-cleat. Then do the same for the aft line. Re-hoist the sail with the main halyard to the proper tension. There is no real need to tie the reef points under the the boom (the reefing lines are taking all of the strain, but it does look neater if you do fold the sail up and tie the reef point on opposite sides of the sail together under the boom. Try it while you are at the dock a few times to get comfortable. Hope this helps.
