Sail Reconditioning

I just received back my main sail that I sent to Sail Care Company for reconditioning. The main is 12 years old and, even though it still had life left in it, it was dirty and needed the leathers replaced and restitching in certain areas. Sail Care did a great job with the repairs but, more importantly, re-resined the sail which brought the sail stiffness equal to the brand new genoa I just purchased from a sailmaker. I would highly recommend them to any of you who is thinking about replacing a sail to contact them. I prefer spending $350 to re-resin rather than $1,500+ for a new sail. There number is 800-433-7245.

How long will it last??

Does Sail Care say how long the re-resin lasts?? Will it "wear" as if a new sail, or will the resin disappear after several uses?? Roc

Re-Resining Life

They say the re-resining last 3 to five years and then you can, again, re-resin the sail.

HOW long did it take?

I called them recently and they estimated 6 to 8 weeks to return a single mainsail for a Ranger 23. I then asked HOW long it would take to clean, re-resin, and restitch (only where needed) an inventory of about 15 sails. They said it would take about 4 months. HOW was your turn-around?

still waiting . . .

I sent my 33.5 main to Sail Care on Feb 28 and I'm still waiting for it. So its been 10 weeks, a little over the 5-6 weeks they promised. Its getting close to launch time, I guess I'm gonna have to call them.

Turnaround time

I believe I sent them my sail in February and got it back last week. I would call Nancy, she was very helpful to me. I did order one of their sail tie systems that attaches to the bottom of the boom. Still didn't get the delivery from them.

Excellent company

I would guess the turnaround time depends on when you send them in. I sent mine the first week in December and got them back by the last week. Great company, they sent a writen estimate, did what the said they would, back on time and under budget. the results were far better than I had hoped. It was refreshing to do business with a company like them.

Very Positive Experience

I have to agree with Thorp. I was also thoroughly satisfied with Sail Care's responsiveness. I sent my genoa and main to them in mid-January, had an estimate within 10 days and had the sails back by mid-February. In addition, I had bought one of their sail cradles at the Atlantic City sailboat show in Jan 1999 but never installed it. When I was talking to them about the sails in Jan 2000, I asked whether I should use rivets or screws. They told me they had upgraded the hardware package that is sent with their new sail cradles to include screws and a tap, and sent me the upgraded hardware at no charge - they even paid the postage.

Great Company

So far I have sent 3 sails to Sail Care. Could not have been more pleased with them and their process. Great people to deal with.

Hey Phil?

If you get enough of us to send our sails in the fall, do you think we can get a group discount through HOW? I've seen Mickey's sail and was TOTALLY impressed.

Sail Care

I called them and they said my sail had a stain that didn't come out the first time, so they had to clean it again, should be shipped today. BTW, I'm planning to send my jib in this fall.

my $.02 worth

Had my '84 mainsail done by sailcare and it looked like new when it came back. The broker that sold me the boat was amazed. He'd said that I would have to replace it. The best thing was that Sailcare evaluated the sail first and only made a few stiches and replaced the reefing lines. I had expected them to tack on $$$ for repairs, etc., based on the local "marina" adivce I had received. I highly recommend them. You can pick up a discount coupon at most boat shows. One warning tho, it took a few phone calls from me to finally get the thing shipped back to me. Their communications could use improvement, but they are very nice people. And apparently honest - which makes up for anything else IMHO.
