I just bought a Catalina 27 (1975) The sails are no doubt the original. I have been looking to replace these with better used sail. I found a company that reconditins sails WWW.sailcare.com. Has anyone used this kind of service before or know anything about it?? I don't want to spend a ton of money but my sails are rough. Help!!!

Look in the archives. If they are the original sails and you have the money, will keep the boat for two to three years you are probably better off getting new sails. Catalina sails can be bought fairly cheaply from JSI, Sail Source etc.. Doyle, Ulmer, Mack etc. may cost a little more but then again you get what you pay for. All depends what ypu want to do with them. Good luck.

Sailcare

They are just down the road from here( about 45 minutes north/northeast). They do a incredible business. They did two of my sails. I have visited the plant. They recieve the sail, Lay it out and test weak areas. This determine it's condition and they also check for areas that need repair. Thier repair is at a reasonable price, they clean, and reresin the sail( a special process). Most people ar every happy with the results. Some times things like the bolt ropes will shrink needing further adjustment on the sail( can't be determined by Sailcare till you put it back on your boat.) Infequently a nasty stain can not be removed. Hopefully Mark Plouch will jump in here with advice on recuts and if they should be done before or after Sailcare. Sailcare will also install telltails for a minimal cost. They have other services but you should talk to them. r.w.landau
