sail performance

Can anyone tell me the difference between how old sails perform vs. new sails? I heard here (somewhere in here) that new sails convert "heel to drive" - which makes me think that old sails just push you over but don't let you get anywhere. We bought a 1965 O'Day Daysailor and I think the sails are more than a little shot. (Like really, really shot.) We went out in light wind (5 -8 kts) and couldn't gain any headway sailing to windward, but did experience some heel. Thoughts, anyone? Kelly Purinton "Daisy Sail"

1-1.5 knots and 5degrees less heel

Those are the results for a new Doyle main on my '77 h27. We replaced original 24 year old sails that had been reshaped at least once. See my review for more details. We were out in 20 knots, unreefed, and stayed at or below 15 degrees of heel while operating the whole time over hull speed. This best addition we have made to the Lady Lillie so far. David
