I recently purchased a set of used sails. How do I get the numbers/glue off them without damaging the fabric?

Removing Number Glue

Ken,The only thing we have found that will remove the dried-out adhesive is 3M Adhesive Remover. You should be able to find it at a good hardwarestore. Flood the area with the remover, wait 3 minutes to let it soften, then scrape the goo off with a plastic scraper. Repeat if necessary. It is a messy job but it works. When you are done sprinkle baby powder over the area to absorb any residue left on the sail.Thanks,Bill C.Doyle Sails

Thanks, Acetone and MEK were mentioned on the regular board. I thought they would be very hard on the fabric. The 3M stuff sounds like a better choice.

what about Goo Gone

On annother list I saw a recommendation for something called Goo Gone. According to one poster, it twas recommended by a sail maker and another poster said it worked for them.I put more trust in first-hand information - especially if it is from someone associated with Doyle.A link to a site with more information about Goo Gone is included with this post.Many ThanksBob Musson

Adhesive removers

Acetone only makes the glue soft and smeary but not easy to lift off. MEK is nasty stuff. I wouln't use it. Whatever you use use rubber gloves and plenty of ventilation.Bill C.Doyle Sails

Many thanks for the info on the 3M adhesive remover. Looks like we may be snowed in this weekend so will give it a try.Bob
