Sail numbers

Just joined a sailing club so I can do club races. My question is how are sail numbers determined, are they from hull number? We will be racing this Sunday and I can't wait to see if we have what it takes to compete in our h240. Carl & Suzi h240 Relentless

I am confronted with the same question. I submitted my hull number. I will know later today , or Monday evening, at the latest. I did my first race in my Hunter 240 , and I did much better than I expected. Would have done a lot better if I had started on time. I was about the last boat to start. I will do another this Wednesday.

unless your local fleet has specific rules, you can generally pick your own number- the standard is 5 digits

Hull number

Most people I know go with the hull ID number, as this pretty much guarantees a unique race number. You can pick any number you like, but it becomes an issue if you're in a race and two boats have the same number.

Assigned

Believe it or not, sail nunbers are assigned so that they are unique. There is no charge for this, but your boat is then registered with the number. I went through this when I started racing last year. I beleive it is through your local US Sailing association. It took longer to get the phone number of the person I needed to talk to than anything else. Once I had that and spoke with her, the assignment was done over the phone after I gave her the boat specs.Steve

Many of the clubs that race which I was affiliated with over the past 30 years usually have chosen the hull number or portion thereof as a rule of thumb. Take for example a Hunter 260 with a hull number for example HUNF981G000.Then the actual hull number is 981 and if there is a conflict put an H in front of 981.This is the way the Catalinas have their sail numbers. I have heard of some clubs choosing thier own numbers but that is rare. I hope this helps you all.Crazy Dave Condon
