Sail Numbers

I am curious as to how numbers on the sails are assigned. I have a 20 O'day and have noticed in pictures that some 20's have sail numbers and some do not. Mine do not, they are stenciled 4/74 and as my hull has an 8/74 production date, I have to believe these are originals. The boat was in storage for the past 15 years with the previous owner. Any clues, ideas, etc?Thanks

When I had new sails made for my 272, the sailmaker put the hull serial number from the HIN on the mainsail. The original sails from Neil Pryde didn't have numbers on them. It was the sailmaker's idea. I like it. I own hull number 238 and it is visible every time I raise the sails.Tom
