My main sail has no large numbers displayed on it. What do these numbers represent and I assume that I must take the sail to a sail canvas shop to have numbers placed on it.

USYRU Racing Numbers

If you want to race and join a sanctioned racing organization you must display a unique ID number on each sail as assigned by a Governing Organization such as the Chesapeake Bay Yacht Racing Association, LIYRA etc. You don't need numbers unless you compete in races sanctioned by these organizations.

When you get a PHRF certificate for the first time, in most fleets you will be asked for your sail number. At that point you can assign yourself a number providing it isn't already taken within the fleet. Since my 410 was the 47th one built by Hunter, I chose the number 41047. Your sailmaker will be happy to bond your number to the main, and if he thinks there's a good chance of selling you another spinnaker in the near future, may even do it for free.

USYRU?

As usual I may be the bearer of ill tidings here, but except for the few instances that actually ARE as Mr Polk describes, the typical boatbuilders' practice is to display the hull number or serial number as the 'racing number' on the factory-supplied sails. This is a cute (meaning trite) practice to make owners FEEL like they really have got 'official' racing numbers when in reality most owners, like Mr Chastain, probably aren't the wiser. I would only recommend having such numbers if they are legitimately for racing, in which case you should DEFINITELY have them. Otherwise posers could paint a NASCAR number on their T-Birds or Monte Carlos and it would mean the same thing. JC 2

Hull No

Our h40 is hull number 217. when we had a new main made we had the sailmaker put "217" as well as th "h40" logo on it.
