I have a 1971 Ericson 29 with pretty new sails. They have no numbers on them. I have my old sails so know what the number should be so need to get them on the new sails. I want to try some racing so need this id. I was going to juse use a colored sail repair tape and put them on in block style. I looked in the archive and saw nothing about whether this is a good way or not. Is this the right way or is there a better method?

If you refer to the PHRF numbers required
for racing you'll have to check with the local Fleet, see link, about transferring the number to your name. Usually sailmakers have the numbers available. Currently the only Ericson 29 on their valid list is JAGUARA.

If you want a discrete number that nobody else can use then you register with US Sailing and apply for sail numbers. You will pay a minimal one time fee and be assigned your own sail number. No other vessel with have your number (5 digits). Alternatively you can pick your own number but with no certainty that someone else also will use that same number. Some folks use tape and others will paint on numbers. Either will work fine.

My C350 came w/ hull # on mainsail
It confused me at first because the hull came from Florida and the sails came from California inside of a Catalina 36. When the broker and I installed the mainsail I told him he had grabbed the wrong sail because of the number 363. I had assumed that it was the model number of a 36 ft Catalina. His reply was "Don't you know your own hull number when you see it...duh." That is a pretty good system IMHO because you can see at a glance what the hull number is and I notice a lot of people on these boards list the hull number of their boats.

Dont feel so "duh". Someone saw my hull number on an Allied site (Yahoo) and said "wow thats the boat on the cover of the brochure". I looked at the brochure and " DUH !" BTW, i didnt know about the hull number thing until I was about to purchase a new genny for my Catalina. Tony B
