I came across what I think are the original Vector sails for my 1982 H27. They do not look like they have ever been on the boat. What I found interesting is there is no sail number it only has the "Hunter 27" on the main. I am going to swap them out with the sails I have been using and give them a go, they actually look to be in better shape! Does anyone know if they were normally issued with sail numbers from the loft or was that up to the owner to have done at a later date?

Just curious!

I didn't really know either so from an internet search >> https://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20100617065033AAqXbY0

However, if your newly found sails did originally have a number that was later removed, then on inspection you will undoubtedly find evidence of the number still on the sail. Mostly numbers are self-adhesive and removal will leave a stain. Or if the numbers were sewed on, then you will have the stitch marks and probably a slight difference in sail cloth color where the numbers once covered.

I know this because the current main sail on my 1980 Hunter 36 is from a Catalina 36. I removed the Catalina insignia as a matter of Cherubini Hunter pride -- and to not cause confusion to all the Catalina owners on San Francisco Bay. The sail number was 1700. I pulled off the "1" and the "7" and removed the self-stick residue with acetone. And I filled the center of the two "0's" with self stick blue dacron to add a sense of whimsy. On close inspection, the imprint/stain of the Catalina logo and the 1 and the 7 can still be seen as in the upper number of the attached photo.

I Was Asked About That...

...this weekend. My 1978 33' has the original sails. They have the h33 logo above the number "63."

My guest asked me if the number was related to anything.

"HELIFINO."

To the many of you smarter than me.....does the "63" mean anything?

Original sails did not come with last two or three HIN numbers present. Might have been an 'option' for additional cost. Dealer didn't offer that option to me when I bought Intuition.
Many owners added them locally after purchase.

Hunter sail numbers

After much consternation and consideration, I concluded the following as regards sail numbers.

If you want your boat's 'serial number' displayed on the sail, to reflect the age of the boat (no small matter of pride for many of us), you will have to use the following formula:

year + month + sequence number.

My boat's HIN is 'HUN25027M74HG'. These digits translate to:

HUN25 = model of boat;
027 = sequence number, for given production series;
M = HIN is given as model-year designation, meaning that the ending letter reflects the month in a series in which 'A' is August;
74 = model year of boat;
H or G (most people will have one letter here) = month of model year.

Thus Diana's *true* serial number (what goes on the sail) is '74 G 027', representing the 27th boat built in February 1974. By this formula, this is the ONLY way by which the sail number accurately and uniquely indicates the boat's actual place in the production series.

(Diana's apparently unique HIN having two letters at the end appears to indicate some confusion about whether she was cut in February or March. After I realized that there was no February 29th of that year, I've decided that she was built during the week in which March 1st was a Friday and someone in the mold shop manning the Dyno gun played a trick on us all.)

On a related note, does anyone with a mid-'70s boat still have the original (as designed by my dad) 'shadow' 'H' logo on the mainsail? Mine doesn't; but I am putting it back on.

So if my HIN is HUN31003M83H

Means my boat was the 3rd 31' boat made in March 1983?

My Sail number should be "83 H 003" ?

Sail numbers are used by Race Committees an to a lesser degree by SAR teams to identify boats.

Its very helpful if each boat has a unique number. To that end, each national sailing authority (US Sailing in the USA) can issue a 5-digit number to you. The cost is $100 to get the number. But if you also plan putting the USA 12345 on your sails, figure $10 each and you are looking at $160 just for stick-on numbers for two sails, $240 if you add a spinnaker. Not cheap. I know people that have paid less for their sails!

In the USA sail numbers are always numbers. In the UK there is often a letter suffix (GBR 5443 T)

OR. You can legally use your hull number if your boat is a recognized One Design fleet. I can tell you no hunters are. But 99% of clubs are OK if you use ANY number, as long as it does not conflict with another number in the fleet. It does NOT have to be your hull number. Just putting a single '5' on your main sail will cost you only 20 bucks! Note: using a number that is not your hull number, like the number that came with used sails, is a great idea, until a boat with a legitimate claim to that number shows up in your PHRF fleet.

Protip: Starboard number is ALWAYS higher.

Cool,

My new jib has no number, but my new main sail has 74 on it already. I will wait to see if I can get her race worthy to worry about changing sail numbers

Roll with that. Technically genoas ( >110%) need numbers too, but jibs do not.

Broal's question -- artwork

Braol, I have the artwork for this. That is-- I have made new artwork, based on my dad's original stuff, and may make it available to others who are interested. It's one of the things that's always going to be unique to our Cherubini-designed Hunters.

I have not got round to this because I do not currently have a proper website. When this is up (after the New Year; before recommissioning season), I'll have a place to direct people to see this kinda stuff.

Hunters

As said most Hunters I see have the big H and than the boat size # after that
but just on the main and any other # are usually racing #.
I was able to use my H-36 for racing and I always see Hunters with the H and boat size # on the Main and on newer Hunters also on the sides of the hull.

That's awesome. I might be interested in vinyl sticker reproductions (small)to put on the hull after repaint...or maybe a burgee with the logo on it! I think a Cherubini Hunter logo'd burgee would be a good seller amongst the old-school Hunter crowd here.
