I am going to purchase a new mainsail and would like to know ,if I can shorten my leech measurement from the original manufacturers measurement (oday 322) and not create a sailing problem. Thank You

Mike, I would ask a sailmaker about this.

The last time I replaced our genoa and RF I used Doyle Sailmakers in Huntington (see link). Mark Washeim was quite knowledgable and spent some time discussing details with me on the phone when he was not crewing on the Newport/Bermuda race. They are also close enough so they can come and measure your boat (if they have to) and help rig the new sail once completed. I am certain that you can tinker with the dimensions of the sail a little without hurting the sailing characteristics of the boat. Just remember that the designers used a specific sized main sail for a reason - to balance the jib/genny. I grew up in SC and essentially learned to sail on Hempstead Harbor. Once you get your boat in the water watch out for the sunken sailboat mast that is sticking out of the water by HH Club and Mosquito Creek. Will you be mooring at one of the clubs or using a slip?

Mike , time to consider the triangle

If you change the length of one edge you change the angles of the corners.

If you are having a new main

made, you should measure the three sides of the sail area you want to fit yourself using any number of procedures/forms available at most of the online sailmakers websites. Or have the loft making the sail take the measurements. I would not recommend using any off-the-shelf manufacturer's measurements, particularly for a main. Also, most lofts will come to your boat to custom measure your boat and discuss your needs. This costs more than some of the offshore sailmakers, but may be worth it. When I had my new main main by North, they came to my boat to measure and we decided to reduce the leech measurement a few inches in order to accommodate and clear my bimini. It was great service and well worth the extra cost as the sail fits perfectly.
