I haven't subscribed to Sail Magazine for a few years. Today I get in the mail an offer for a 1 year subscription for $5. How can anyone go wrong with that?? I guess they think you will continue after the initial year?? Maybe.... maybe not.

Before you send your $5. Too good to be true?

I did it.

I got the same offer about a year ago. Like you, I didn't see a down side and I haven't found one yet. I am nearing the end of my one year subscription and they, of course, are sending me renewal forms and other offers, none of which are as good as the original deal. Unless I get another good offer soon, I will probably just let it expire.

money is in the ads

The money in magazine subscriptions is in the advertising revenues. I'm not a huge fan of SAIL. Too racy specific for me.

Ken that Sail Magazine deal is legit. They apparently make their money from advertising and need to keep their number of subscribers up.It's the best deal in magazine subscriptions out there.I have been on it for almost two years. Go for it!

Then why not free?

If they make all their money on ads, and need to keep the circulation up, then why not give it away free like Latitude 38 and 48 North? They would balloon their circulation!

Free

I've been getting Sail for about 6 months for free with an expiration date of Dec. 06. I haven't subscribed in a few years either. Guess that advertising is paying for it. Maybe they think that I can't live without when the free subscription is over. Bill

Better than print

Magazines as well as newspapers are going through a growing pain which many refuse to adjust to... the internet... many folks will say a screen will never replace a printed piece of paper -- they're wrong. I am soon to launch a webzine on sailing... really sailing... not much racing or too tech heavy for everyday sailors. Just the facts. You'll know when you see it. It is going to change the way weeklies or monthlies get needed stuff to the masses. It's not going to replace the New York Times but it will be as important to those with the wind. Chow.

No racing or tech???

Sounds like all ads to me ;-) Seriously, what will the content be? And what about portability and glossy pages? I'm not putting a computer in my bathroom. BTW, also signed up for the $5 sub. It is legit. They send magazines and then you get billed. Tim R.

Free would be bad

We give out free brochures for our companies trade shows. You wouldn't believe how many people will take something if it's free, even though they have no use for it. 5.00 is enough to make you want it. Take Care Steve

Steve is right

I'm a newspaper publisher, and there is a lot to be said for people paying for the periodical. Free newspapers struggle getting advertisers because they can't verify their circulation. By the way, I dropped Sail years ago because their circulation department was incompetent. Perhaps they've improved.

Nope, still incompetent

Just realize if you sign up for this deal, they will hound you for years with renewals that will overflow your recycling bucket. As for free. "You get what you pay for" and "If it is too good to be true, it probably is" Enough waxing poetic, time to wax the boat! Tim R.

I paid too much

I subscribed through Amazon for $10. Just got the first issue, and I doubt I'll renew it. SAIL is full of racing news and ads for the "new Conspicuous 45." Neither hold my interest for long.

Just subscribed

I just subscribed for a year in the middle of March. They sent me January, Februaury, and March issues all within one week. I called and told them that was kind of a problem since I had already bought them on the newsstand. They said sorry and that they would extend the subscription 3 months. I thought that was kind of a cheap trick. Oh well. I'm sure glad that I live in California and can pick up LATITUDE 38 at the harbor office. Latitude is by far the best sailing rag out there and you can't beat the price.

Sail Hat

I've had no luck at the hat either, but it's fun looking for it. The mag is alright. It has more racing than I'd prefer, but it's a nice blend. JerryA
