Hello, I am an editor at SAIL Magazine, and I am currently writing a story on "How to Race Your Cruiser." I am looking for Catalina owners who have boats that they primarily cruise but that they also occasionally race. If you are interested in working with me on my story, please shoot me an email (dschmidt@sailmagazine.com) or a phone call (617.720.8624). Please note that my time is very tight on this deadline, and I will not be soliciting help after 3/7/07. Thanks, David Schmidt

Hi David; One reason you may not be getting any responses, is on another message board, "Ask All Sailors" on this site, there is a thread with over 65 responses complaining that they did not get their Feb. issue of your magazine. When the circulation dept. was called various responses were, "a truck went over a cliff" to "Gee, no one else has complained", and "the issue is sold out and cannot be replaced." Funny thing, all the newstands in my area had plenty, but I did not receive my copy in the mail. Bottom line is you can't treat your readers like crap, and then expect them to cooperate with you on a project. I know it is not your fault personally, but you do represent the company. I don't race or I would help you out. fair winds Dave

Racing Catalinas

David, I have been racing my Catalina 30 for the last 5 years. although new to racing we have been encouraged by the other sailors and have done quite well in the last 2 years. We finished 3rd in our fleet in the "Mills Race" which is a 38 mile course started @ 8:00 P.M. and completed between 3:00 A.M. & 6:00 A. M. North Cape Yatch club races are held every Wednesday night from May thru September. We also did very good this last season finishing in 3rd place overall in JAM "B" in the Spring series, tied for 3rd overall in the Summer Series and tied for 2nd overall in the Fall Series. Our boat is a 1983 Catalina 30 tall rig. We had to figure out how to make it faster without spending a bunch of $$. I bought Don G's Sail trim info about 3 years and that has helped. also I looked at how other boats that were beating us were rigged and I saw that we needed to make some changes to the boom and the mast in order to be more competitive. Those changes have helped considerably. We found that many of our competitors were able to point 10-15 degrees higher than us. Adjusting the boom position help and we were able to point higher than before. I know you have a deadline so here's something to start with, I hope this helps. Jobee
