I'm showing more of my ignorance by asking this question but I know very little about head sails other than jibs and genny's. Can someone tell me what type of sail that Hunter 41 is flying?

Asymm is usually flown this way but it does look like a Symmetrical. Nice shape isn't it ?

Answer to your question, no. Jibs and genoas are head sails, spinnakers (asymmetrical or not) are not head sails. However the spinnaker on the cover is an asymmetrical. Notice that there is no pole and the spinnaker is flying on the same side as the main.
