Just have to love Good Old Boat magazine. This months cover is a Cherubini Hunter 27, and a mighty fine boat. Just so happens its my boat and my photograph. My wife and I are enjoying our cover girl:dance:
I like Good Old Boat because, as the magazine states, its the magazine for the Rest of Us. I can relate to the boats featured. The articles are often about projects I'm already contemplating.

I saw one on either ebay or sailboat listings. 1970, "Clean," well varnished and about $7,000 Firm, if I remember correctly. I'm officially in the market for a new old boat and this piqued my interest.
So, how's she sail. I need a boat I can single hand, likes a 15 kt. breeze and can go upwind like a banshee. PHRF in the 180's. Oh, and draws less than 5', can do overnights and can be trailered out of the boatyard for the winter.
Should I look at this more closely?

Pretty much like sitting in a waiting room and reading those home decorating mags that feature homes that I couldn't afford the carport. Still, every now and again something catches my eye. Same with Sail and its concentration on high end yachts. The optimal utilization of a few hundred square feet of living space is a constantly evolving art on which some pretty clever minds are focused. The overwhelming number of ads are what keep that mag a cheap source of occasional inspirations.

I doubt Karen and Jerry at GOB would copy articles from Sail or anywhere else. One of the reasons the mag is so expensive is they depend on subscriptions instead of advertising dollars to keep going. But worth it, to me anyway.

Iv`e been a GOB fan since beginning this 3yrs. ago. I a weak moment I let a Sailing saleslady talk me into a subscription while at the Annapolis show. I consider my GOB for practical reading, keep them. The Sailing is for fantasy reading and I quickly recycle them to my Dad.

I do have a subscription to Sail but that's because I got it for $9/yr for 2 years so I'm not really defending it. I do work for a major metro newspaper and while it is not a national magazine there is probably some similarity. Ideally a newspaper wants to have a 70/30% mix of ads to news to be financially viable. As the ad space has shrunk over the years the news hole has had to shrink also.

oh but Latitude 38, completely different story

Join the SSCA www.ssca.org Extremely interesting. Stories, by sailors and no adverts! They have an online and print version monthly newsletter. Also latitude 38 at http://www.latitude38.com a monthly rag but lots of adverts but good content as well. (most of the adverts are not more mega-yachts, but for marinas, boatyards, supplies,etc.) Both are interesting and neither are in light reflecting, eye blinding print. I download them every month

Latitude 38 is something I almost cherish! I find them so interesting, cover to cover...

Sailing Mag. has featured the "little Guy" we met with Kimball Livingston and he did a great write up about us and our friends from Seattle as we sailed the Puddle Jump, Thanks Kimball!

I vote for Good Old Boat Magazine. If you want to learn something, read this mag. Most others just touch on a topic and don't delve into it. GOB gets it done and you won't be inundated with ads, but the advertisers actually sell stuff you can use. There's more to life than West Marine.
