Seen all kinds of boats and met with all kinds of brokers. Still a bit confused about brand and size of boat that I should buy to take a year off and go sailing. Have raced on all sizes of boats, and done all of the courses on heavy sea sailing. Looking for comments from those who have taken a year or two off and gone away to sea. Not looking for questions or comments about my experience and do I really know what I'm doing? (I really do know how to sail) I just want to hear from those who have done it and the equipment (kind of boat) that they feel is up to the task. New or used? What extra stuff (equipment) is necessary or not. I have a rough idea but would like to hear from those who really do know. There will be the two of us (wife and I) and would like to spend part of the year working the Atlantic and go from there. Thanks

Racing Experience
Racers are indeed the best sailors, Peter Blake, John Rosemaniere, Tom Blackaller, the list is never ending. Hey, welcome to the club. That is the question, the ultimate yacht a great cruiser/teacher ended up with a Halburg-Rassey, I love the Hans Christan (can't afford 'em), a good choice is the West sail 32, but you sacrifice space for the double-ender. Robert that is your decision and with your experience you will make the right choice. Remember, if you are in the racing mod, buy an airpalne, or a cat at least. What I mean is, get a nice bronze THREE blade prop, not a fancy MARTEK, ya seen all the gears & wheels and springs in those suckers, like a swiss watch. 1)EPIRB.2)Wet-suits (I always carry one) 3)An INFLATED infaltable easy to deply, leave the floor boards out. 4)Windvane or a STRONG auto-pilot to keep crew rested and fresh for safety. 5) Harnesses, and a Jack-wire, REI climbing webbing will do. 6)H.H. VHF. 7)H.H. VHF. 8)Lotta spare AA batteries 9)Headlamps, this should have been no. 2. You sound like the kind of guy that hs gone over this, I went through my first Power-squadron at 14. Good seamanship.

My apologies to all the mates here, I ahve been fortunate enough to a sailing family, been around it for over forty years, and recieved so much help along the way. One 'captain' who would not let "crew" look at his chart nor check his navigation????Hey I do make mistakes too and I do surely want the crew to 'catch' me before we're on the rocks. Always looking for good crew, but I am out here on the west coast, but on long hauls, like Mexico, I can authorize a flight to Cabo... This will be my last year of it, too much stress, lack of sleep, and etc. I'll look forward to talking privatly.

Since you didn't get the message last time, I'll cut and past it here again.... Questionable part is how somebody can be so experienced but yet know so little about boats? Most sailors I know have opinions about boats and are constantly serving their opinions to others like it was beer. How could somebody be around sailors so much but feel they still need more opinions? Interesting indeed.

I think Robert was pretty honest about his knowledge and what information he was looking for, which is input from people who have actually lived his dream instead of some wanna be who spends all his time reading Cruising World.

Are all the same person. Read the attached threads and you will see. The same guy who comes to a production boat board and wants advice on non-production boats because production boats aren't good enough for him.

in one of the links you posted Franklin, the guy already had a Beneteau 361... so there goes the which is better, lets bash production boats reason... They all say they want to start in the Atlantic and work down to the Carib...all of the posts indicate they live on or near the Eastern seaboard... where else would they start? If they lived on the West Coast they would have said Mexico... and many have said exactly that. Is it possible that out of the many millions of people in the US, a huge majority of which live on the eastern side of the US and are nearing the age of 50, three might be dreaming of doing roughly the same thing and came to this site to seek advice? Overall I respect your opinions Franklin but on this one I think your comments are a bit off base and do a disservice to this site as a well recognized source of knowledge. Respectfully David

I want to point something out which is not meant to to be accusational or inflamatory, just observational. Franklin, At 7:52 pm on Oct. 27, you posted a short response to Jason & Spouse of VA, in which you wonder what was really going on behind a question like his coming from "someone so experienced but yet know so little about boats" clearly indicating your suspicion that the question was a potential troll or the like. At 4:20 pm on Nov. 20, you posted one of the five very full and informative responses to what you are now deeming to be the same question from Peter of NY. The first question in October was suspicious yet the one in November was not. Now this one is again. No response is expected or necessary, I just wanted to highlight those facts. I will not respond to any more posts on this thread. Respectfully David
