I have been restoring a 28 for several years. The last task is to refurbish the motor. It is a sail drive gas engine. Has anyone out there installed a deisel in a sail drive model?

Dennis: I have not repowered my OMC to either a diesel or a Honda gas sail drive but there is a web site for the Honda: www.saildrive280.com and the Yanmar folks make the SD20 which, I believe hooks up to the same lower end as the Honda. The Honda runs around 7K and the Yanmar around 11K. Not cheap but the OMC is a Pain In The Ass! Your call... Mike S/B PitterPat, Lake Huron

been looking...thoughts

my 28 has an OMC saildrive as well. Currently it works fine. (knock on wood). You know the minuses of the engine (loud, gas guzzler, smokey, etc.,etc.) At the Philly Sail Expo I went to Yanmar and asked about their saildrive. It's the perfect motor for the 28 however, including installation it will cost about $11,000. When my OMC finally goes, I will be installing the Yanmar Saildrive. I've looked at the saildrive280. My thoughts are if you're going to repower, why repower with another gas engine??? You'll recoup the added cost of the diesel in fuel costs over a couple of years and the resale value of the boat will be much greater. I also took a look at the Volvo Penta saildrive and it will barely fit into the engine space on the 28 (it's a 20hp saildrive) plus I have heard sopme bad things about the Volvo Penta (the engine block for the Volvo is made by Cummings)
