Sail deterioration at the clew

I have a Hunter 340 which I bought new in 2000. I love my boat. But I am wondering about the mainsail which rolls into the mast. A few weeks ago the clew of the mainsail broke loose from the sail. A close inspection shows that there is a great deal of deterioration of the strips of material that attach to the end of the sail. I guess this is from the sun, since when the sail is cranked into the mast a small triangle (including the clew) hangs out. I never experienced anything like this before with a sail this new. I guess I should have some sort of a boot made for the small clew area that hands out. Any ideas, comments, similar experiences? ajp
