I am trying to make a decision about a new dacron mainsail. Was wondering what other Hunter owners thoughts were on the subject... I am not a fair weather sailor and don't mind reefing early and enjoying the ride. I chose dacron because I cannot justify more expensive material for a cruiser. There seems to be some people who put North Sails and Quantum in the upper class, Doyle, UK, and Sobstad in middle class. Any thoughts......

Talk to the sailmaker.

Talk to your sailmaker and let them explain the difference between the sail cloths. Not all cloth is created equal (regardless of the "weight"). A good loft can show you the difference in the products that they are selling. Speak with a few of lofts. You should be able to get a similar story from them. You do not need those expensive high tech cloths for cruising. Your requirements are like most of us. You want a high quality product that will last for many year (8-12 years).

Pick a sailmaker and ask him/her

I'm with Steve. We picked a sailmaker the year after we bought Lady Lillie, based on a price quote for the sails we needed, and our perception of their knowledge and experience in our area, and backing from their mother company. We ended up with Doyle Sails in Euclid, and have been most happy with their advice, and with the three sails we bought from them over two years. By the way, they stick with us - the advice continues whether on sail trimming, or other issues. David Lady Lillie
