Sail cloth weight

The Vega manual lists sail cloth weight in GR/m2. How does one
translate that to weight per square yard? In the manual the weights
are listed as; Main 250, Light genny 170, Standard genny 230, #1 and
#2 Jib 250, Drifter 110. How does this translate or what are the
recommended weights per square yard? thanks

Multiply grams/sq meter by .0295 to get oz/sq yard...

"Polyester sailcloth and some nylon fabrics may be expressed as
ounces per sailmaker's yard the latter being 36 inches long but only
28.5 inches wide a carry-over from the days of sailing ships and
cotton sails and equivalent to 0.79 square yards, so a fabric
described as 1.1 ounce material may in fact weigh, on average, 1.4
ounces per square yard. [To convert ounces per sailmaker's yard to
grams per square metre multiply by 45]. Also the weight may refer to
a generic class rather than a specific average weight 4, 6 and 8
ounce sailcloth for example."

My recent two new sails, a main and a 120 jib, are both 6.5 ounce
Dacron.

Oooh Oooh ... I just found this:

Sailcloth

Click on "sailcloth.com" at bottom center of page.
On the next page click on the left side menu pick "sailcloth weight
converter"

Using this tool the Vega weights translate to:
250 gram = 7.35 ounce
230 gram = 6.77 ounce
170 gram = 5 ounce
110 gram = 3.24 ounce

I guess my main and jib (220 gram) are slightly on the light side ...
good for coastal cruising.

Ooops, correction to the table in the previous post: those are ounces
per square yard, not ounces per sailmakers yard (36" x 28.5")
Here is the Sailmaker's Ounce (SMOZ)table:
250 gram = 5.8 ounce
230 gram = 5.4 ounce
170 gram = 4.0 ounce
110 gram = 2.6 ounce

I thought it looked too simple. Now I have to call my sailmaker and
see what measure he used when he supplied my 6.5 ounce cloth.

Thanks for that. Neil Pride gave me a quote for a #1 jib. They
specified 6.5 oz which must be oz per sq yd, not sailmakers cloth,
this for a "coastal cruising sail". ($1027.00 with 1 row of
reefpoints.) This also works with Bill's formula which is easy to keep
in the boat's book. Thanks Craig

Full batten main, triple stitched with three reef points, #1 jib with one set of reef points ( I didn't like them ) and a bright orange storm jib were around $1500.00 from Neil Pryde in the mid 90s.
