Cleaning Sails
Last century, I used to clean my own sails once in a while. I needed a large area where I could spread out a huge blue poly tarp to open the sails on (you don't want to make the problem worse by laying out your sails on a surface that will get them dirtier). Barefoot, I would then scrub the sails with a mild detergent solution (like Dawn) using a soft sponge with a long handle). I worked on stains with organic stain removers and a soft bristle brush. Then I had to hose off the detergent and turn the sail over and do the other side. Finally, I tied lengths of line to each corner and tied the lines to trees to get the sail off the ground until it dried. The process was not hard, but time consuming and you need a nice day and lots of space. Then I got smart. I began sending my sails to Sailcare every few years....
