We have a carferry that puts out black soot that blows over the marina twice a day all summer. It has left black steaks on our furling jib. The rain must wash it down inside when it is rolled up or at least that is what it looks like. I've tried washing it with a Woolite & vinegar solution in water but it didn't touch it. Also have problems with spider excrement on the sails. The sail is brand new last year so don't want to damage it with harsh chemicals. Any ideas how to clean these two things off the sails?

Sailcare

If you want it to look new send it to Sailcare. I would be concerned from what you say that this will be an every year thing if you don't change something. Good luck

Try the stuff that you use to clean whitewall tires. I used it this spring and it did a pretty good job of cleaning up streaks and smudges. If that doesn't work, try Grease Lightning...works like magic.

Give the bill to Ferry owners

I would make a fuss. A real big fuss. With all the money we have to spend on pollution controls I don't see why the ferry should not have to clean it up. Send them a bill for your time and troubles. Get everyone else to do likewise. Modern day engines aren't allowed to spew into the air so why not fix the old ones too. Sometimes it is just a lack of care on their part. Fair winds
