The December issue of Cruising World Magazine (published in N. America) had an article that I contributed to, called ' Choose the right sails for the long haul'.

They also have included the full text of the contributions on their online site
I think most here might find the article quite informative and for a much more detailed read of my in-depth comments from the link below.

I spent a fair amount of time on this article and it really incorporates a lot of my ideas that I have formed over the years of interacting with our Neil Pryde agents, Beneteau Owners and Dealers on sails, construction, cloth choices and the like.

My contribution can be found at: http://www.cruisingworld.com/gear/sails-rigging/best-sails-for-sailing-around-the-world
I hope you find it useful and/or informative.

The premise for the article was two boats...a traditional cutter from the 70's being outfitted and and will have things that will apply to older Beneteau models and those who might be considering an inner forestay for example or even planing to do an offshore passage. The newer contemporary 'cutter' being outfitted and how to best go about this different but similar boat will be more suited to the newer style Beneteau boats like the Sense line and the newest boats such as the very new B38 cumming online now.

Thanks again for the valuable feedback.input, and questions you have given me over the years as this helps me to accumulate real world data that can be made sense of and often shows me problems that can be better addressed or better implemented on our sails.

Best,

Bob Pattison

Bob,

Nice piece. I was heartened to see you talk about Hydranet. I am amazed how well a set of hydranet radial sails have held up on a Pogo 12.50 that we charter annually in Greece. These sails are used year round in the Meltemi and have great shape after 4 hard years. In addition, very mildew resistant. Glad to see you using the cloth.

Beneteau 411 Oceanis Annapolis
A great primer for preparing a boat for extended cruising in all conditions. What resources are available in Annapolis to help with the proper design and configuration of a trysail installation on my Beneteau? I'd love to add a inner forestay to fly a self-tending or storm jib but just can't see a good place to bring it into the boat structure. Currently carry an ATN Gale Sail, but it flies well forward of an optimal position.

411 set up

Gunni,
You should be able to set up a removable innerforestay...at deck level it would attach at fitting through deck to anchor/chain bulkhead. Beneteau will have the part. Then you need a quick release forestay tensioner and wire holder to remove and stow the forestay when not in use.
Johnson marine: www.csjohnson.com has both of these.
Trysail: If you have a furling mast, the trysail can go directly onto the mast in the aft-center slot. If classic main, you'll need s.s. 't' track (schaeffer marine)
Resources: Can I pitch our agent in Annapolis, Bruce Empey? :) Long time sailor, racer, offshore the works. And of course the folks at AYS.
