Hi guys Im have been a dock kind of guy for years now I lost my dock slip and Im moored out for the first time Im in a bay in lake george but in a storm I can get hit with about 15MI of wind and 4to 6' high waves comeing down the lake. I sit in about 10' of water and I have 15' of 12" chain with 12' of threestrand nylon 5/8 my weight is a300lb mushroomanchor but there is not much to grab on the bottom there is about 12" of soft mud and then hard gray clay and the mushroom is slideind around on the bottom and seems to be on its sidewith the shank shifting and spining depending on wind direction the boats are very close .last sunday we where hiting andI had to choke up on the pendentwith the chain up at the serface this weekend I pulled the anchor and moved it out about 10 feet what do you think I was thinking of adding another mushroom 250 lb and about 30 ' of chain and put it north of the boat since the wind and waves can only come from that way the south is land locked and the waves cant build. how much space should there be between boats ? help me guys . Mooring Block - Helix

Hi John, No question the added mushroom will help even if it fouls. Other options would be a mooring block or helix type anchor. No experience with lake bottom - mooring here is open to SE to Europe - 7000# boat with 2500# block. Rode out small hurricane with winds in the 80 - 90 area and waves 10' not by choice. Many also use helix mooring. Consider scope, wind resistance, draft and displacement for distance to other boats. Think wind resistance and displacement are primary for lake mooring. All major mooring problems around here are from owner installed. Mushroom anchors not permitted or permitted only with dead weight on shank. Purpose of dead weight is to prevent the anchor from uprighting and punching a hull with fall of the tide.

second anchor

I think the second anchor is a good idea but I would make it another 300#. I have a Beneteau 361 I had a 400# w/ 35' of 1/2 chain and then the mooring bridle. I have since moved into the inner harbor and since there is no "swing" room added another 400# with the same chain length and a single bride so I am now moored bow and stern. If I were you I would add additional chain to the first anchor I would be afraid of chafing with that much line on a mooring. Good luck
