Safety Rail Removal

I was wondering if it's possible to remove the cable and post safety rail along the sides of the deck of my boat. It gets in the way of my tarp I will pull down under the boat. The cable fits loose in the top of the rails.

Generally the uprights are called Stanchions and the cabling is called Lifelines. The lifelines are relatively easily removed and replaced (although it will probably require some specialized tools); the stanchions on the other hand should not be removed unless you are prepared (or you need) to rebed and remount them in the Spring. The only reason I would ever remove the stanchions is if they were leaking water into the deck (which is a fairly common problem) which can do serious damage to the deck. The point is, that unless you feel qualified to replace them properly (i.e.: with no leaks) I would not recommend removing them… And it's certainly not a job I would do on an annual basis!

Not To Overlook That Maybe His Stanchions Just Mount Into Deck-mounted Bases?

Ron, yes, of course, duh! If that is the case then the whole assembly comes off by loosening a simple set screw!! In which case, by all means go for it.
