This post is not intended to solicit any sympathy however it is a warning/reminder for each of us. There have been a lot of threads dealing with boat safety on the water but not many about safety on the dock. Last Sunday after getting back from our second sail of the season my wife and I were remarking about how much we were looking forward to the new season. We were at a new marina, met lots of new friends and had several weekend trips planned. I had gone off of the dock to use the head and was on my way back to the boat when due to my own inattention I tripped over a garden hose. I saw the hose, knew it was there, and managed to trip over it anyway. For better or worse, I did not fall on my face but caught myself with my left foot with my 230# body falling forward. I'll leave out all the explitives but the bottom line is I severed my Achillies tendon from my heal :( Had surgery yesterday and will be in a boot and cast for 8 to 12 weeks before I can even begin to put any weight on my left foot. So much for the the new sailig season! Bottom line here is that we always need to be aware of our surroundings both on the water and off. Forgeting about where we are and what we are doing can ruin the entire season. If you get anything out of this post at all just keep it in the back of your mind and remember "BE CAREFUL OUT THERE"

Thanks!

This doesn't apply to just a new marina. Each year there are new "tenant's" at any marina and they bring their old habits with them. It is this complacency that catches us all. Here is a new season, but there are always new "traps" in the early season, wherever you are. BE CAREFUL OUT THERE!

You're absolutely right Marc

Sorry about your injury and I hope you have a speedy recovery. Most of my self-inflicted injuries have occured in the slip or at anchor while the boat was completely motionless. Our boat has a mine shaft of a companionway that drops a full six feet and I've managed to fall down it's full height TWICE. Both times, you guessed it, with the boat securely parked. There's certainly a difference between relaxing and not paying attention.

Hi Marc

Sorry to hear about the accident. REALLY bad timing. My dock neighbor's wife had a similar accident last summer but at least it was August then... I was telling your tale to my daughter and we quickly realized we know each other. I'm Tara's dad. We were planning to call you shortly as we planned to be at the H rendevous in Mystic but it looks unlikely now. Perhaps some other time . My email is K1VSK@cox.net if you get up this way and want to sail with us. Don
