Is there a definitive checklist for what safety equipment is required to have on the boat? I found this checklist from USCG Auxiliary (http://forms.cgaux.org/archive/a7012.pdf) but am unsure if all items apply to my boat, a Catalina 27.

I have found some random blogs that list items, but I would like to find the legal/true source.

I live in Seattle, WA if locale make a difference.

I have the following:

Registration / Numbers
Nav Lights
PFD's (wearable and type IV)
Flares / Flags
Fire Extinguisher
Navigation Rules
Marine Radio (UHF)
Dewatering Devices (Bilge pump and a manual pump)
First Aid

Thanks!

PS - can fire extinguishers be recharged? mine are set to expire soon.

The TRUE legal source is the one you quoted. The accompanying pages after the cover sheet discuss it all. www.boatsafe.com also has some information. Your boat is over 26 feet so you need all the placards. Inboard vs. outboard engines affect the checklist. Always good to have MORE than you think you need. Up to date flares are always on the list.

We get our checklist done every year at the Catalina Rendezvous here on SF Bay. Great fun, helpful auxiliary members do the checklist. Nice to get the placard.

In general fire extinguishers with metal heads can usually be recharged while those with plastic heads are considered disposable. Here in CA the CG Aux. does not require a current cert. tag as long as the gauge is in the good range. The examiners will usually have the pollution and MARPOL placards available also.

in some instances, you are required the have a placard for your VHF radio also.... basically it is "posted instructions" on how to use the radio properly in an emergency. so that anyone on the boat can summon assistance in the event the captain is unable to...
im not sure what parameters determine the requirement, but i couldnt get my VSC decal without it on my powerboat....

I dont know where you sail or how the waters are governed there, but state requirments differ a bit from federal requirements. just make sure you are adequately geared up to cover either requirment. and you wont find both state and federal requirments in the same location, they could never make it that easy.
