I just started this course yesterday in Melbourne VIC. It is a required course for Cat 1 & 2 races here in VIC. I think it is a course that all sailors should take. I have been sailing for many years and while there is a lot that is not new to me, I am learning new stuff and reinforcing lots of other stuff. Tonight we spend the evening in the water with all our foul weather clothing on. It should be a fun and exhausting night.
I encourage all to take it (or one similar) if possible.

I took the US Sailing's Safety at Sea seminar along with some sailing buddies in April. It's a prerequisite for some types of "offshore" racing on the Great Lakes, too.

Here are some details about this seminar, if you haven't heard about it before. To put it bluntly, it's 8 hours of what could possibly go wrong offshore. (My friends had to leave the room during the injuries/first aid section). It's also about how to prepare for the worst, and get through it. Recommended for all serious sailors.

BTW, the season's just started, but yesterday a 25ft boat struck something and sank at the mouth of the entrance to our yacht club. No one hurt.

Dido. Have taken it many times, should be required for all boaters. There are plenty of jerks out there that don't know which way is up. They may want to add a section on surviving in an oil slick, yuk!

Agree. Just took the US Sailing Safety at Sea Seminar and the Safety at Sea hands on courses. The hands on course was great and very valuable. There is no substitute for first hand experience lighting a flare or using a fire extinguisher.
