That is sad but it may be unjustified to focus on age as opposed to not wearing a life jacket. Being swept overboard by a sail or boom could happen at any age.
Agree totally. What does age have to do with it? I'm older than he was and single hand my boat, including offshore.

I single handed my 53' ketch for a couple of years and never wore a PFD, off shore. What good would it do, other than allow you a very slow & painful death? Who knows you're even in the water? Why would you want float around in the ocean, halfway to Bermuda for days? Thanks, but no thanks.

Yeah - I feel the same way, and when offshore, single hand, I don't wear one either for exactly that reason-
I DO use a tether.
But the thread was concerning an inland sailboat race, and in that particular situation, I maintain the PFD is the biggie, not the age of the sailor.
