I carry Bear spray it can change the mind of a charging bear and will fire 30 bursts more than 30 feet. Looks like small fire extinguisher so it looks at home on a boat in plain sight....Dale

With that said, Somali pirates packing AK-47 and rocket propelled grenades would probably just get POed and back off to max effective range and fill you "full of lead" and shaped explosive charges. These guys are not what I'd call civilized by any measure of the word. they are poor, desperate and have ABSOLUTELY NO respect for life.
Avoidance or running in packs where one of the boats is big, steel and gray would seem to be a better option.
My advice is just don't go there, Been to Somalia and trust me, there is nothing there to see or do. Columbia, well that is a much nicer place so roll the dice and take your chances.

I wonder if you named your boat "armed and dangerous" if that wouldn't tilt the odds of an attack in your favor. I'm not a criminal but I have to believe if I was going to rob a boat it would be one named " sea princess" over one named "armed and dangerous"

Just saying you do need to be able to defend yourself but it doesn't hurt to look like a difficult target too.

Or mount water cannons all around your boat like Captain Phillips' boat :) I watched it last night and I am still in disbelief. Can't believe 4 dumb arse pirates can take over a ship. No weapons on board while in pirate waters is insane.

Kito, I'm with you. I am satisfied that there are laws about weaponry on merchant ships, (I guess), but there are also laws about PIRATING A DAMN boat.
Two mini guns on either side spitting 50 rounds a second at some beat up scow would leave little more than an oil-slick in the water. Spraying them with water? That is utterly INSANE! Now I realize this vermin likes taking a bath about as much as a cat, but I will refer back again to 'The Art of War'. The ship is outgunned despite its weight and size. What to do? Let me see...

Hell, I could sit on the superstructure with a single shot .22 and I guarantee you I could turn 'em around.

"Uh, uh, guys. We need another driver, this one is leaking".

We also watched that and I too am amazed. The ladder would not have worked if the water jet was working. However, why they can't just have at least one gun and a hand grenade or two is just plain silly. Great Movie tho! I remember when that event happened and how giddy we all were when we found out how it ended. (I won't issue a spoiler)

I believe that since all those instances, most of those ships do have some type of security or firepower. When the Somali piracy was first getting air time, my impression was that the general idea was, "no one would be stupid enough to mess with a US ship."

You may be right. Haven't heard of any pirating going on for a while.

It's just indicative of our now mamby pamby way of showing that the US USED to be the world super-power. A few years ago, we would wait 6 months too late and bomb the crap out of the country next door. Now we shoot water at them.

I'm thinking a real nice card from Hallmark, not a cheap one, and just ask them nicely to not board our ships. It'll probably work just as well as the 'just say no' campaign, that successfully got America off of all manners of terrible drugs.

Is there not a signal flag that means "do not approach?" Or maybe just hang a Smith and Wesson flag from your spreaders?

Yeah, great idea! At least while the local authorities are on board searching your boat for weapons, several times a day, you'll be safe from non official boardings.

Just a beginner sailor here, but this has been a question in my mind for a good while. I WILL have a defense plan if attacked. My choice of weapons is still under heavy consideration and study. I think that Captain Ron makes a very good point about people's individual realities heavily influencing their perceptions. It depends on your sphere of familiarity.
If I thought that readily surrendering what some thief(s) there would be no point in this discussion as I would give them the **** and call my insurance guy as soon as the thieves are out of sight. 30+ yrs of fugitive recovery ( US and cross-border) I have been to a few places and seen a few things. I have dealt with sweet old grandmas and also viscous inner city convict gangbangers. My point here is that sometimes co-operating is not going to keep you safe. I have seen many times completely uncalled for escalated violence from attackers against unresisting victims.... things can get crazy really quick in these situations. Think sharks in a frenzy. Calling for help AFTER the fact may not do you a lot of good.
I am trying to put together some kind of plan for defense that will protect me and mine but not land me in a foreign jail.... I have seen several of those in my time...lol.
Has anyone here had any experience with improvised weapons? Things that are not immediately or commonly recognized as a lethal weapon but can be quickly deployed and used as such. Weapons are tools, sometimes more than one tool is available to the thinking man. That said, If I knew of a safe way to carry a trusty AR which would still be quickly accessible, I most definitely would!!
