Hello All,

New member here. Just acquired a very neglected S2 8.0B. The former owner could not maintain his boat and his membership account and ended up donating it to our YC. I purchased it for very minimal price and figured it will be a great project boat and will eventually be fun for the whole family.

The boat is a mess. Needs a bottom job and hull paint, new lines and new sails. The interior wood is in good shape, as well as the counter tops and cabinets. Needs new cushions. At one point in its past, it was flooded. About 3 inches of standing water. Most likely from leaking chain plates. So, needs new floor boards. Chain plates have been sealed nicely since and bulkheads seem solid.

These things are really cosmetic and just need money and elbow grease to deal with. But, there are a couple of things/problems that I have concerns about and will most likely be asking this community for advice in the near future. The two biggies are:

- Sagging mast step. I have rebuilt mast steps before and this seems pretty straight forward. What amazes me about the design of this boat is that there really is no real compression post built into the boat. The mast just sits on the midship bulk head. Will be asking for compression post design ideas.

- OMC saildrive. Looks to be in good shape. I can turn the driveshaft and feels like it has compression. I am not going to try to start it until the boat is out of the water and I have had a look at the lower end.

Also, how do I determine the hull number? The HIN # is: SSU 26345M79 B
Figured the 79 stands for 1979?

I plan on setting up a blog of the work in progress soon. Anyhoo, thanks for listening and I look forward to hearing from fellow owners.

Cheers!
John

Thanks Tori. Figured it was that, but had to ask.

Amos, your before and after albums were a huge part of our decision to pull the trigger on this project. Was nice to see the possibilities. Love the fridge and the countertops!

I think I will upload my before photos later tonight so y'all can have a looksee and determine how crazy we are.....

John,
Looks like you have some good bones to work with. If I was you I would start on the outside and then interior. Good luck!!

We are here if you need advice.

Looking at you pics

Do those stains inside cubbies in the head suggest possible toerail leaks? Not a big deal considering, but such stuff can ruin an interior refit in no time. I agree with other posters sort this stuff out first and make sure she's water tight above and below, then move inside.

Big rains this past week. Spent a long time down below. I believe most of the staining is coming from windows that need reseating. I have one window that is cracked beyond repair, is there a supplier for the S2 windows or do I have to make my own?

On a side note, bet y'all didn't know an S2 8.0B mast can be taken home on top of a Ford F150 and fits nicely in a three car garage!

you will have to make them or have them made...i used crons aculite(recomended as the material hunter and catalina use on all there boats by main sail) for the glass material and used dow 795 black sealent for the bonding...make sure you tool the stuff on or it may not bond very well
