I see a lot of posts where the boat is listed as S/V whatever. I guess S/V stands for sailing vessel but I am couriuos when do you refer to your boat as S/V?

If you are writing with regard to your intention

to bring your boat to a place then it would be correct to refer to the S/V Mary Ann as the boat. Likewise you could refer to the M/V Mary Ann. In this case it being a motor vessel. In my case I refer to S/A Bietzpadlin being a sailing auxillary. With the S/V Mary Ann you might also inquire about a harbor tug for docking.

When responding to Coast Guard, Water Patrol ....

or other call for help. This lets them know we are a sailboat and will take more time to get to the site. For example, we were sailing on Lake Michigan, east of Beaver Island headed for Mackinac Island a couple of summers ago. A call for assistance came from a fisherman about 10 miles to our southeast. We responded to let them know we were near, but almost 2 hours away. When we said "This is sailing vessel Midnight Magic. We are..." and gave are location and estimated time to arrive. Coast Guard responded with thanks for offer but had other offers that were closer. Mark

As others have mentioned and anytime

you are hailing or being hailed by radio. In an ocean full of boats, I can hear all the radio traffic from Los Angeles well into Mexico. Helps everyone to know you want the S/V Mary Ann, not the M/V, F/V, R/V, or Coast Guard Cutter Mary Ann.

I always refer

to my boat as a "sailing vessel" when I'm hailing another boat on the VHF (channels 16 or 13)that does not know me or my boat name/call sign. I also do this when hailing a bridge tender to request an opening.

S/Y?

I've always thought it sounded a little "hoity toity", but I recall reading somewhere that S/Y, as in "Sailing Yacht" is actually more appropriate than S/V for most sailing pleasure craft. I don't use it but wondered if anyone had heard something similar. Trevor

Trevor,

Since a yacht is a privately owned sailing vessel, the term sailing yacht is more accurate. It's a pity that the word yacht has become associated solely with large, expensive boats. It's a good word, and should be revived by the pleasure sailing community. Jeff s/y Eagles Wings

Good idea, Anchor Down and Trevor! C'mon gang, let the revival start with us! S/Y

S/V, M/V, R/V etc.

The terms sailing vesel, motor vessel, research vessel etc. are used so that someone else can find you in a crowd by narrowing down the visual search. If you hail a bridge for opening and use S/V, the bridge tender will be looking for a sailboat and not a power boat. When the term research vessel is used, i would think about restricted ability to maneuver. Maybe pulling seismic cables, or have divers down. Its all just a quickee ID thing. Tony B

How about USS (United States ship) for Navy warships? I have heard submarines on the VHF identify themselves as "United States Submarine."

I generally hear the navy calling on VHF as Navy Warship, sometimes with a number, sometimes with a name. Rarely do I hear US Navy Warship. Have never heard one identified as to type, such as carrier, submarine, etc.
