When will the USCG just deem this a manifestly unsafe vessel..?? This is now at least the third time they have asked the USCG for assistance once in 2004, 2006 and today. Perhaps there have been others I have missed.

Here's one from 2006:

The scary thing is this was built with the idea to take handicapped kids sailing. We're not talking adventure seekers who like to risk life or limb but innocent handicapped kids..

Pretty sad when an 88 foot vessel can't handle 20-30 knots and 10-13 foot seas...

"Raw Faith" is gone. She was deemed too structurally damaged to tow and her two person (you read that right, 2) is now ashore on Cape Cod. I assume the CG will sink her to prevent her becoming a hazard to navigation. It's an easy decision with no fuel oil on board. I followed her trip quite closely and was surprised that she got as far as she did. http://forum.woodenboat.com/showthread.php?123324-Raw-Faith-Tracking

Is there a link to give some background on this? I think I have the gist of the current situation and state of the vessel and crew from Roger's link, but it would be of some interest to figure out how she got from A to B (or Z).

Oh, duh. I could have googled this in the time to write it.

Raw Faith

I think this is the boat we saw in Portland this spring..?? We saw her from the hotel and it looked quaint.. but when we got a close up look thanks to Roger's hospitality, it looked a lot more dangerous than quaint.. The guy is lucky to be still alive..

Re: Raw Faith

Maybe the coasties can use it for gunnery practice.

I don't know if taking the boat out from under this guy will cure the problem. He must have had support from a few other people (fairy godfather) to continue. I wouldn't count him out yet.

You may be right. As reported by the Rockland newpaper writer's blog, she is still afloat and the USCG is re-evaluating her condition.

http://knox.villagesoup.com/news/story/rawfaith-founders-offshore/368287

The possibility of her being relatively undamaged can't be ruled out. As in the Leavitt abandonment, fatigue, funk, and fear rather than vessel condition, may have prompted the distress call. If I had been the USCG boarding officer and unfamiliar with the vessel, I'm sure that I (taking into account my experience as a vessel designer) would have viewed that built in hog as evidence that the vessel had broken her back. In a vessel without effective auxiliary power or pumping systems and dependent on a very small crew for pumping power, there would have been a lot of water sloshing around which would have added to the impression that the vessel was breaking up. Looking at the vessel in general would also make it an easy conclusion to come to.

They may have now re-assessed and learned things from the owner, such as the hog being pre-existing, and concluded that she is sound enough to survive a tow.

See the above for the CG video. Raw Faith was certainly named appropriately. She sat in Winthrop nearly all summer this year and I never saw her move, except when the hurricane was expected. Must say I wasn't impressed with her construction, but hey, I haven't built one...not that I would...I don't think that Charliecobra would touch her from what I saw. I hope the poor guy has insurance. The CG may end up sinking her as a navigation hazard (or just in retribution at this point) and he certainly won't get insurance again after this adventure. I don't know what he was thinking...sailing around with only two people on an 88 footer, even rigged appropriately, seems like a recipe for the CG for sure.

IIRC Raw Faith's owner had later referred to those conditions in the video as "60 foot seas" more like 6-8 foot rolling swells.....;)

Let's hope this incident doesn't spur yet more regulations against boaters.

Latest word is that the Coast Guard stood by until the ship sank of her own accord.

How many of the early posters botherd to read the total news story. The boat has already sunk and therefore no need to cry for the coast guard to deem it unsafe.

I have a question for posters. Why is it that when a fellow boaters problems are discussed here very little sympathy is expressed and a whole lot of ridicule is expressed.
