My second best tool on the boat for that Sat afternoon work project is my portable drill - a Ryobi 12 volt. Both batteries have just about had it. Need new ones. Local hardware store (Home Depot) is out. Their web page sez that Ryobi no longer makes the 12 volt battery. Anybody know where there is a new battery or a replacement for. RD

Ebay

Has everything except french beer. Actually, I am not sure about the beer. I will have to look. If that doesn't work the 18 volt tools are great and inexpensive too.

Same Deal With My Old DeWalt 12V

They have canged the battery style and finding the old style is very tough. I have thought about running wires from the boats battery to the drill. Not quite cordless but would require a much shorter extension cord.

Checked ebay

There are 8 or so 12v batteries for sale. Some are brand new. There were 43 items found in re French beer. Most were ads and some were quite strange but what would you expect? No actual beer though.

Hey, Patrick

If you find some eiswein there on Ebay let me know I have one bottle left and doubt I am going to get back over to Germany any time soon.

Split The Case and Replace?

My old one just gave out and I got a replacement on sale for less than a battery, but my Raytheon handheld battery pack has never been anything but a pain. I used to go to a battery place that would split the cases and replace the internal packs for little dollars and the quality was better than new. That's what I'm hoping to do with the handheld. Hard wire it to your 12V system

I had the same thing happen to my Ryobi 12V drill. What I did was remove the batteries from the battery case, and install a long (~25') cord with a cigarette lighter plug on one end. I can now use the corded Ryobi drill on board utilizing my boat's 12V electrical system as power. Admittedly a bit less convenient having the cord to haul around, but at least this way the battery never runs down. Of course I will be screwed (not literally, unfortunately) if I ever have to use the now corded drill up the mast, as my cord isn't long enough.

Black and Decker Cordless

I'd be careful buying the Black and Decker Firestorm(?) 18 volt cordless. I bought one from Home Depot on sale and the old saying is right, you get what you pay for. I don't use it very much, now both batteries are dead and I can't get them to charge. Plus the charger went out 4 months after the purchase. Spend extra money and get a Dewalt, they're worth it.

I've found it a lot cheaper to

replace the whole drill set, then to buy new batterys by about 1/3rd of the price. Tom s/v GAIA

Rebuilt battery

Took Steve D's recommendation and surfed a visit to the primecell.com web site. Going to get my Ryobi 12 volt battery rebuilt for $36.50 plus shipping. Their words about rebuilding the NiCd battery pack in the Ryobi 12 volt highly unique package are encouraging. Let you all know how it goes. Surprised no one asked what was my most favorite boat tool - one that I call - Mr Wonderfull. RD

New drill with old problems.

I also looked into Toms' idea of just getting a new drill. The problem with this is that these cheap drills have cheap battery packs. If you purchase a quality unit that is NOT worn out, it is worth getting a couple of batteries rebuilt. This is not to endorse any specific units, but I will tell you that the Seafit unit that I purchased from WM does not compare to the Dewalt unit that I purchased 10 years ago.
