I was wondering if anyone has replaced the rudder bushings on an h28. The boats survey said that they should be done. Any hints, clues, or ideas would be appreciated. Another topic, anyone have loose chain plate tie rods, and what to do. Thanks for your help, Bill

Bill. I'm assuming your surveyor told you that ..

the rudder play is out of spec? Can he tell you what the spec is other than a subjective feel? Did he offer a solution other than replacing the bushings? The rudder on our H28 had play, maybe a quarter of an inch at the base. My surveyor said it was okay and suggested to keep an eye on it at the next haul out to see whether it became worse...it did not (that was in three years). He said a way to reduce the play is to buy a small piece of sheet teflon from your local marine store and cut a section that you can slide around the lower rudder shaft to act as a shim/bushing. You can do this the next time your boat is on the hard because you need to drop the rudder down a bit to insert the teflon shim. Terry
