By way of not thinking, I got metal shavings on the topside of my boat while drilling holes in the dock for cleats. Now there are lovely red spots that act like they are going to be stubborn. Is there a solution to this problem or just learn to live with it? Thank you, Brandon

Boeshield

Boeshield makes a rust remover that works great. I think FSR (Fiberglass Stain Remover - get it at West Marine) would work. But perhaps Jim has a less toxic solution! LaDonna

On and Off

I used this stuff called On and Off on a bad rust spot from leaving a pair of pliers on deck for a couple of days in the rain. It works, can not tell where the stain was! Use gloves and wax right after removal of stain. It is suppost to work on the brown stains on the bow. I plan to use it this weekend on them. Will let you know HOW it works.

Thank you for the help

Thank you for the helpful tips. I should have known to go to West Marine, however; all the employees there think that they know absolutely everything and I didn't want to buy 10 different rust removers in order to find the correct one. I'm beginning to think West Marine knows nothing and I have razed the employees about getting a bonus for sales and they swear they don't. That's Oklahoma for you. If you don't know, act like you do.

Forgot the name but....

this stuff works better than on off for rust stain removal. It's a greenish/bluish gel. It comes in a small plastic jar. Just smear the jell on and a little while later the stain is gone and just rinse with fresh water. This stuff got rust stains off that on/off wouldn't touch. After this "Senior Moment" passes, I'll post the name. And no it's not Naval Jelly!

I know Boat US has it....

and am quite sure just about any Marine store will have it. Try it, you'll love it. Go to boatus.com and look under stain removers and you'll see what it looks like.

Iron Out

I had a similar problem with some stains from a rusty bolt that made some nasty streaks. I mixed up a solution of iron out and washed it down with a paint brush. After a very short period of time the stains were gone. When complete besure to rinse with plenty of fresh water Besure to try it out first to make sure it does not hurt your finish.
