My kldb (keel lock down bolt) Was very rusty and after spraying it with just about everything it felt like it was breaking loose. NOT the nut twisted out of the strap. I got a new one and started to remove the old one. Well the old one was more rust than medal and the top of the "L" broke off. Doese anyone have an idea of how to get it out? Its on top of the trunk were you can't get a tool. OR would it madder if I moved it forward or aft an inch or two. Is one derection better than the other? I do like to use the kldb when I an on the coast.

You may have to manufacture some kind of tool. I agree, don't cut a new hole. Try drilling or tapping what's left of the bolt and coaxing it out with a power driver or some such thing. The KLDB-a good idea poorly executed. If you can get the beast on the trailer, try working on it from inside the trunk.

Ya Dan I think your right a new tool needs to be made but what? The strap that the nut is welded to is L shapped. The return of the L is what came off. It might be the only thing that was not rusted. Anyway some sort of right angle tool is needed. The part is on top of the trunk.

Is this the original bolt?
There is no visible strap holding a nut on my '72 C22 KLDB. It is in an awkward place which makes it difficult to get any mechanical advantage on it. Could it be you are the second man to "repair" this problem on this boat, or third perhaps? I don't envy you.

I guess I left a few things out. Let me try agine. The boat is a 1971 C22 swing keel. When I got the boat last year (3rd owner) the KLDB was rusted good and it may have been cross threded. I spryed it with every thing I could get my hands on, let it soke and tryed to get it out. I'm a strong guy and I twisted it out of (i left this part out) the fiberglass covering it, nut and all. I got a new one from CD and went to cleaning off the factory glass. I found that what was an 1/8" strap of SS was now a 32nd. The strap is 8 to 10" long L with a nut welded at the top of the L and the return on the other side of the nut. It also has holes in it to give it more tooth. Installed it is upside down nut at the bottom faceing out and the return gos over the top of the keel trunk. The whole thing is glassed over. I can get my hand up there and if you look at you boat you might see a bump in the glass on top of the trunk above the KLDB. Anyway my return snaped off. I wounder if I glass over the old thru hall hole, forget about getting the old one out and move the strap an inch or two forward or aft. I wounder if it would madder. The other thing is would one drirection hold better that the other. Sorry for the lack of info on the first one.

Jon the cut-away is a big help. My strap go's up and that one go's back. I will have to build out the trunk if I do that ,But I won't have to move the thru-hall. Best of all I can get to it all.
